Georgia is going to urge Russia to account for the genocide of the Circassian people in the XVIII - XX centuries. The Georgia's parliament is to consider reviewing this issue during the fall session. Previously, some of the Circassian organizations have already presented facts of genocide commited by Russians to international community, but did not find understanding and support.
As is known, over 400 thousand Circassians were killed and about 500,000 of them were displaced as a result of the genocidal policy of the Russian Empire in the Caucasus during this period. Only 80 thousand Circassians still live in their historical homeland. As Nugzar Tsiklauri, one of the leaders of the pro-presidential majority in the Parliament of Georgia, told journalists in Tbilisi, Georgian scientists, who studied archives, found that the ethnic destruction of Circassians had taken place indeed. According to the PM, the materials have already been sent for study to European and American specialists. After consideration of the issue by the Georgian Parliament, the documents will be also sent to parliamentary committees on legal and human rights, Tsiklauri promised. It is to be recalled that only 50.2 thousand Circassians are now living in the 17 villages of Karachay-Cherkessia republic. Circassian diaspora exists in the Middle East, where the representatives of this ethnic group were deported by Russians in the second half of the XIX century. Russia waged wars against Adygs in the Western Caucasus until 1864. After the wars, Russia deported to the Ottoman Empire more than half a million of Circassians (Adygs). Meanwhile, Russia is also trying to accuse Georgia of genocide of Ossetians. Even though these accusations seem absolutely ridiculous (about 170 members of the Ossetian militias and local people were killed in the course of the war, staged by Moscow in August 2008), Moscow continues to use this topic in its propaganda attacks on Georgia. Thus Russia declares that "the Georgian military have deliberately killed and abducted civilians, unnecessarily abused prisoners of war and civilians, that there were irregularities in the use of weapons: the Georgian side allegedly indiscriminately used heavy offensive weapons and cluster munitions prohibited by international conventions, as well as 500-kilogram bombs against the civilian population of the republic". Georgian response to these charges can be watched at this link.

The Russian press has picked up a story first report in the Sunday Times from October 4, quoting Russian and Israeli sources, that the Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had secretly visited Moscow last month to present President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin with a list of Russian nuclear scientists that are helping Iran to build a nuclear bomb. The secret visit by Netanyahu to Moscow on September 7 was initially denied by Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov (ITAR-TASS, September 9). Later it was confirmed by Medvedev, who said that he met Netanyahu to discuss “different matters,” but did not understand why the Israeli prime minister came to Moscow in secret. Medvedev added: “We talk with the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad –our position is to talk to all” (www.kremlin.ru, September 20). |
