"In no event we should admit that the situation in Kabardino-Balkaria becomes same terrifying as in the neighbouring republics," Valery Khatazhukov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. For this purpose, in his opinion, the political leadership of the republic should make everything possible to stop this "road roller". "We don't know what these forces are and what they want. It's obviously only that they ignore the laws and the constitution of the country, they conduct retaliatory actions and ignore the opinion of the public and the authorities of the region," said Mr Khatazhukov. In his opinion, such actions just contribute to expansion of the social base of terrorism. "Efficient war on terror is possible only within the bounds of the law," the human rights activist has emphasized.

Sandra Kalniete, the former Latvian ambassador to the United Nations, UNESCO and France, writing on Prague Post (hat tip: Robert Amsterdam): While Russia has always played a significant role in Europe, relations took a new dimension after European Union expansion. Not only because the EU’s border extended substantially eastward, but also because the 10 new member states have a unique relationship with Russia from a long and often forced coexistence. Now, Western Europe has access to expertise based not only on theoretical assumptions but practical experience. This advantage, if used properly, could benefit the entire EU and contribute to a sound and effective plan of cooperation with Russia. |
