The leader of Russia's opposition Yabloko party has
been detained along with several environmental activists while
protesting in the North Caucasus, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Yabloko head Sergei Mitrokhin told RFE/RL the detentions on October 4 were made just outside of Sochi near the Adler-Krasnaya Polyana highway, which is being built for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The protesters were later released by police without being charged with any crime. Mitrokhin said he and several ecologists were protesting the construction of the highway, which has led to the cutting down of a forest. He said the work has increased pollution in the Mzmyta River.

NATO is concerned over the recent Russian-Belarusian large-scale military drills "Zapad (West) 2009", said on Wednesday NATO spokesman James Appathurai. As he said, the NATO Council at the ambassadorial level of 28 member countries of the Alliance at a meeting in Brussels on Thursday, in particular, has expressed a concern about the extent of the exercises, which "were the largest since the end of the "Cold War", as well as the fact that Russia did not invite observers to the maneuvers which is being seen by NATO as a violation of the Vienna obligations". |
